A two-hour practice session has separated the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards drivers into six groups for this afternoon’s Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell. Will Kimmel, Grant Enfinger, Mason Mitchell, Tom Hessert, Mark Thompson and Justin Boston were the six fastest cars in practice and, therefore, will be the first ‘group’ to go qualifying at 3:35 p.m. CT today.
Kimmel zoomed to the top of the charts in the No. 68 Ingersoll Rand Tools-Messina-Circle Track Ford with a lap of 184.954 and stayed there through the end of the session.
“I didn’t have too much to do with putting this car together because I have been busy mowing grass and working, but the guys gave me a fast car and they are really excited about it,” Kimmel said. “This qualifying is going to be fun. It gets us out of the mold a little bit and try something different.”
Hessert also put up his top time early on and remained there. Enfinger and Mitchell got into the fastest group late in the session and Boston pushed his car into sixth on his final run.
Enfinger said it was his goal to get his car into the top six for qualifying. That group will go out first for the group qualifying session.
“It adds a totally different element to it,” Enfinger said. “It’s more strategy than just going flat out and trying to go as fast as you can. We want to be up front. This is a fast car.”
For qualifying, there will be five, six-car groups that will qualify together and one seven-car group. Qualifying will last a maximum of 10 minutes per group, but could be less if all of the cars choose to end the session early.
