Clint Bowyer tops Sonoma final practice

Toyota/Save Mart 350 - PracticeThe NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) qualifying track record at Sonoma Raceway has the makings of being broken, as Friday’s top practice speeds (in both sessions) would be good enough for a new Toyota/Save Mart 350 qualifying track record.

Kurt Busch’s speed of 95.470 m.p.h. – in today’s first session – would have been good enough to have beaten Marcos Ambrose’s record of 95.262 m.p.h. – set in 2012, and Clint Bowyer’s speed in today’s final practice was the fastest over-all with a lap speed of 195.988 m.p.h. We will have to wait until Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session to see if they, or anyone else for that matter, can out perform today’s practice and set a new record.

Posting the second fastest lap speed of 95.544 m.p.h., in today’s “Happy Hour” (final) session was Paul Menard, followed by Carl Edwards (95.465 m.p.h) who was third, Jamie McMurray (95.463) fourth and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (95.463) was fifth.

Series Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate, Kyle Larson (95.345 m.p.h.) put up the sixth fastest lap speed, while Martin Truex, Jr. (95.265) was seventh, Brian Vickers (95.229) eighth, Jeff Gordon (95.201) ninth and Greg Biffle (95.117) rounding out the top-ten.

The teams will head back to the track Saturday afternoon at 1:40 p.m. (ET) for qualifying to determine the starting lineup for Sunday’s race.

The 26th annual Toyota/Save Mart 350 is slated to get underway around 3:20 p.m. (ET) Sunday afternoon, and TNT will provide television coverage at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
