Edwards fastest first Cup practice at Atlanta

Carl+Edwards+Homestead+Miami+Speedway+Day+em3SaPbviBGlCarl Edwards, with a lap speed of 192.855mph, was the quickest Friday afternoon during the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) practice session for Sunday night’s Oral-B USA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Second quickest with a lap speed of 191.628mph, was Ryan Newman, and he was followed by Marcos Ambrose (191.417mph) who was third, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (191.199) fourth and series Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate, Kyle Larson (191.113) was fifth.

Rounding out the top-ten quickest drivers were Brian Vicker (190.686mph) who was sixth, Martin Truex, Jr. (190.052) seventh, Greg Biffle (189.779) eighth, Kurt Busch (189.675) ninth and Tony Stewart (189.642) posting the tenth quickest lap speed.

The teams will return to the track later this evening for their qualifying session at 7:10 p.m. (ET) to determine the starting lineup for Sunday’s race. The current series qualifying track record at Atlanta is 197.478mph, set by Geoff Bodine in November of 1997.

The 55th annual Oral-B USA 500 is scheduled to get underway around 7:50 p.m. (ET) Sunday evening, and ESPN will provided television coverage beginning with their 7:00 p.m. (ET) NASCAR Countdown pre-race show.
