Dale Earnhardt Jr. charges on final restart, wins at Martinsville

B06Zy8vIQAEuxhnAfter a red flag and then a 5-lap dash to the finish, it was Dale Earnhardt, Jr., holding off – by 0.344 seconds – his fellow Hendrick Motorsports’ teammate, Jeff Gordon, to win Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Goody’s 500 at Martinsville Speedway.

This was Earnhardt’s fourth series win of the 2014 season, his twenty-third series career win and his first series win at “the paperclip” shaped Martinsville Speedway.

Following Earnhardt and Gordon (who led the most laps – 130 out of 500) to the drop of the checkered flag were Ryan Newman finishing third, Tony Stewart fourth and Joey Logano finished fifth.

Rounding out the top-ten finishing positions were Matt Kenseth taking home sixth-place, Clint Bowyer seventh, Denny Hamlin eighth, AJ Allmendinger ninth and David Ragan claiming tenth-place.

Austin Dillon, with his 12th-place finish, was the highest finishing series Rookie of the Year (ROTY candidate.

With his second-place finish, Jeff Gordon leaves Martinsville with a 3-point lead over Ryan Newman.
