Kevin Harvick tops final practice before engine failure

Folds of Honor Quiktrip 500 - PracticeKevin Harvick showed the fastest way around Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS) Saturday afternoon during the final NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) practice session for Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500, as he ran a lap speed of 191.054 MPH.

Unfortunately for Harvick, the Hendrick supplied engine in his No. 4 Chevrolet suffered failure, and now Harvick – originally starting on the outside pole in second – will have to start from the rear due to the engine change. Everyone that was to lineup behind Harvick, will now move forward prior to the drop of the green flag to begin the 325-lap race.

“Mainly the Hendrick engine guys just wanting to know what I felt. This is a very rare occasion.  This is the first one I have ever had, ” responded Harvick when asked what happened. “The engine shop does a great job.  I am just glad that it happened today.  Our Jimmy John’s/Budweiser team is doing a great job and the car is handling good.  If we were going to have something happen, this is a good place to have it happen because you can pass.”

When asked on how he felt starting from the back, Harvick’s take on it was: “It will just make for a better show.”

Second fastest in the practice was Kasey Kahne with a lap speed of 189.805 MPH, and he was followed by Austin Dillon (189.746 MPH) who was third, Denny Hamlin (189.571) fourth and Carl Edwards (189.493) was fifth.

Rounding out the top-10 fastest drivers in the “Happy Hour” (final) practice were AJ Allmendinger (189.221 MPH) who was sixrh, Jimmie Johnson (188.758) seventh, Clint Bowyer (188.719) eighth, Casey Mears (188.648) ninth and Jamie McMurray (188.507) posting the 10th fastest lap speed.

The 56th annual Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 is schedulted to get underway around 1:20 pm (ET) Sunday afternoon, and FOX continues to provide television coverage.

Ben Kennedy elevated to Atlanta Truck pole after Keselowski’s qualifying time is disallowed

Hyundai Construction Equipment 200 - QualifyingUpdate 2:50pm ET: NASCAR has announced that Brad Keselowski has lost the pole for Saturday’s Hyundai Construction Equipment 200 after it was found that he didn’t cross the start/finish line in time to complete his pole-winning lap in the final round of qualifying.

With Keselowski deemed to have not beaten the clock, that makes a total of 11 trucks in the final 12-truck qualifying round that failed to get a lap in under the allotted time and did not have a lap recorded.

Ben Kennedy, with a qualifying lap speed of 176.684 MPH, won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) pole for this evening’s Hyundai Construction Equipment 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Only Ben Kennedy starting positions was settled in the final round of qualifying, as he was the only one to participate.

Sharing the front row with Kennedy will be Erik Jones, and they will be followed by the top-8 fastest drivers from round 2 of qualifying. That list includes Cameron Hayley starting third, Daniel Suarez fourth, and John Wes Townley starts from fifth.

While ROTY candidate Justin Boston will start from the sixth position, Joe Nemechek starts seventh, James Buescher eighth, ROTY candidate Spencer Gallagher ninth and Brad Keselowski will start 10th.

With only 31-drivers attempting to fill the 32-truck field, there was no one failing to make the starting lineup.

The 7th annual Hyundai Construction Equipment 200 is scheduled to get started around 5:50 pm (ET) this evening, and FOX Sports 1 will be providing television coverage of the race.
