Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton took charge of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend on Friday afternoon as he topped second practice in Barcelona. However, the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel was only four-tenths of a second behind the world champion. Nico Rosberg was third and Kimi Raikkonen fourth as the Silver Arrows and the Scuderia continued their fight for top honours, pursued by Red Bull’s Danill Kvyat and Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen.
In the second Red Bull, an engine change restricted Daniel Ricciardo to a handful of laps at the end of the session, though the Australian was able to salvage 13th.
Jenson Button was an encouraging seventh fastest in the newly re-liveried McLaren, with Williams’ Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa, split by Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz, completing the top ten at the end of the 90 minutes.
The session was briefly red-flagged when the engine cover on Romain Grosjean’s Lotus spectacularly detached itself, leaving debris scattered along the main straight. The Frenchman was able to rejoin the action after lengthy repairs and ended up 12th.
