ROSBERG RULES IN AUSTRIA – the German driver claims back-to-back wins at the Red Bull Ring

CIBzc2gWcAAPzOPNico Rosberg produced a flawless display to win the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday as Mercedes teammate and rival Lewis Hamilton finished second after being hit with an in-race time penalty.

Rosberg took the lead from pole-sitter Hamilton at the first corner and never looked back, losing first place for just two laps through the pit stops.

Hamilton spent much of the race a few seconds behind Rosberg, and his hopes of winning in Austria were ended when he was penalized for crossing the white line at pit exit, resulting in five seconds being added to his final race time.

The start saw Rosberg make a lightning getaway from second place on the grid, moving up the inside of Hamilton to take the lead at the first corner. Hamilton continued to harass his teammate through the first lap, but his charge was soon halted when the safety car was deployed due to a scary accident involving Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen.

HAMILTON ON POLE – despite spinning off in Q3, the Mercedes driver leads the way in Austria

CH8fcVUUkAEX1abAustria promised an eventful qualifying session and whilst the result wasn’t extraordinary, not many would have predicted the way in which it happened.

Nico Rosberg initially secured pole with his first run, before Hamilton displaced him on his second attempt. As both started their third and final flying lap it looked as though Rosberg would snatch pole as Hamilton went off at Turn 1.

However Rosberg, clearly pushing and slightly up on Hamilton’s time, went off at the penultimate corner, where he beached his Mercedes in the gravel, ensuring Hamilton remained quickest.

Sebastian Vettel will line-up on the second row, just two-tenths shy of Rosberg’s lap time. Team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was surprised to finish P17 leaving confusion on his and Ferrari’s faces.

Fresh from his Le Mans victory, Nico Hulkenberg split the Williams pair with Felipe Massa starting fourth and Valtteri Bottas sixth.

Daniil Kvyat was seventh and Max Verstappen eighth, several places ahead of Daniel Ricciardo who could only manage 14th, one place ahead of Fernando Alonso.

Both McLarens will however serve 25-place grid penalty’s – though with them unable to drop that far, drive-through penalty’s will also be served in the opening three laps of the race.

Vettel fastest again in rain-hit final Austrian GP practice

CH77wjOWEAArOK4Sebastian Vettel continued his good form during practice for the Austrian Grand Prix by topping the final free practice session on Saturday morning.

Vettel posted a fastest lap of 1:09.994 to finish 0.017 seconds clear of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton as rain prevented any of the drivers from improving their times in the final 20 minutes of the session.

On the soft tire runs in the first half of the session, Ferrari once again managed to compete closely with Mercedes as Kimi Raikkonen slotted into third place behind Vettel and Hamilton.

However, a red flag period caused by another stoppage for Fernando Alonso meant that no-one was able to complete a qualifying simulation as originally planned.

Rosberg quickest in opening practice for Austrian GP

CH2nJf8WIAAOaULThe Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton led the way in Friday morning’s opening practice for the Formula 1 Grosser Preis von Osterreich 2015, as Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso lost much of the session to technical problems. Mercedes’ nearest rival was the third-placed Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen, who finished 0.6s off Rosberg’s benchmark.

Williams’ Valtteri Bottas was fourth, followed by Sauber’s Felipe Nasr, the Red Bulls of Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo, and Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen.

Cool conditions and a rather green track surface combined to make for plenty of off-track moments as the drivers got to grips with the challenging, 4.326-kilometre Spielberg circuit. Rosberg and Hamilton were among those to make mistakes – the Briton at Turn 8 after setting two personal best sector times, and again at Turn 1, where Rosberg later went off.

It was Rosberg who had the upper hand though, edging Hamilton by three tenths over a single lap and also on race pace when the field switched to longer runs in the final part of the session.

Vettel and Alonso, in contrast, were in trouble almost immediately. Alonso had completed just one lap when he lost power at Turn 8 and had to coast back to the pits, where his car remained until the final 15 minutes. McLaren did at least manage to cure some of Alonso’s woes, though he still only completed 10 laps.

Vettel meanwhile lost drive just over 20 minutes into the 90-minute session and despite frantic work from his Ferrari mechanics was unable to add to his tally of four laps.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Drivin’ for Linemen 200 Notes and Entry List

NCWTSNASCAR NEWS

Passing Of The Torch: John Hunter Nemechek To Take Over Full-Time Reins From Father

There is a dawning of a new era in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

One day following his 18th birthday (June 11), John Hunter Nemechek is back in the driver’s seat for good.

Nemechek, who has been sharing seat time with his father Joe in the No. 8 Chevrolet, will become old enough to be eligible to finish the remainder of the NCWTS schedule beginning in Saturday’s American Ethanol presents the Drivin’ for Linemen 200 brought to you by Ameren (8:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1).

John Hunter – a member of the NASCAR Next initiative highlighting the sport’s top up-and-coming drivers – has competed in two NCWTS races so far this year, logging finishes of 29th at Martinsville and 22nd at Dover. He had problems with his equipment in both events. In 14 career races, he claims one top-five and six top-10 finishes. The Mooresville, North Carolina native won the prestigious Snowball Derby Late Model race at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida in December.

Last season at Gateway, Nemechek led 53 laps before a late spin relegated him to 15th. His performance led to praise on Twitter from a litany of drivers, including Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Danica Patrick.

Joe will take in the event as a guest analyst in the MRN booth. The 1992 XFINITY Series champion has won 20 NASCAR national series races in his career (16 XFINITY Series, 4 Sprint Cup Series).

GOODYEAR TIRE NOTES

Tire: Goodyear Eagle Intermediate Radials

Set limits: 5 sets for the event

Tire Codes: Left-side — D-4632; Right-side — D-4644

Tire Circumference: Left-side — 87.32 in. (2,218 mm); Right-side — 88.31 in. (2,243 mm)

Minimum Recommended Inflation: Left Front — 15 psi; Left Rear – 13 psi; Right Front — 31 psi; Right Rear — 28 psi

Notes: This weekend’s race at Gateway is the first time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series teams have run either of these two tire codes . . . compared to what was run at Gateway last season, this left-side tire code (D-4632) features a compound change for more grip, while this right-side tire code (D-4644) features Goodyear’s multi-zone tread technology . . . the multi-zone tire combines two distinct compounds on the same tire — one for endurance and heat resistance on the inboard two inches of the tread, and one for grip on the outboard 10 inches . . . most recently, this tire set-up was run by Sprint Cup and Xfinity teams at Richmond earlier this season . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams will run inner liners in all four tire positions at Gateway . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

NASCAR XFINITY Series Great Clips 250 Notes and Entry List

InterstitialSlide_Xfinity_922x520NASCAR NEWS

Kyle Busch Returns To The No. 54 After 11 Races Out Of The Seat

NASCAR XFINITY Series’ winningest driver, Kyle Busch, will return to Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 54 team this weekend and compete in the Great Clips 250 Benefiting Paralyzed Veterans of America (FOX Sports 1 at 1:30 p.m. ET) after missing 11 races due to injuries suffered to both of his legs in the season-opener at Daytona International Speedway.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of the 54 Monster Energy Toyota this weekend,” said Kyle Busch. “I can’t say enough about how much Monster Energy, JGR, Toyota and all my guys have helped me and pulled for me to get back into the XFINITY car. This is a continuation of my recovery since Daytona, and we hope to continue to add to my schedule going forward through the rest of the year.”

Busch raises the level of competition when he competes in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. He holds the series record in wins (70), poles (43) and top-fives (175).

Expect Busch to find his groove fairly quickly at Michigan, in seven starts he has one win (2004), six top fives and an average finish of 4.6. Busch won the Coors Light pole for this event last season.
