Nico Rosberg will start the 2015 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix from pole position, locking out the front row with Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg set the fastest time in Q2 at the Circuit of The Americas on Sunday morning, before Q3 was cancelled due to worsening rain.
Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo is third on the grid for this afternoon’s race, followed by team mate Daniil Kvyat. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen qualified fifth and eighth respectively, but both have ten-place grid penalties.
Splitting the scarlet cars were the Force Indias of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg, while Williams’ Felipe Massa and Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen completed the top ten.
Q1 had got under way on schedule, with Hamilton setting an early benchmark before the session was briefly red flagged, Carlos Sainz losing the rear of his Toro Rosso and spinning into the barriers at Turn 4.
When it restarted the track was drying out and the times quickly tumbled. Hamilton, Rosberg and Ricciardo all had spells at the top of the leader board but it was Ricciardo who finished quickest with a 1m 56.495s.
Exiting in Q1 were the Sauber duo of Marcus Ericsson and Felipe Nasr, Marussia’s Alexander Rossi and Will Stevens and the unfortunate Sainz.
The conditions started to deteriorate at the start of Q2, with Hulkenberg, Raikkonen, Kvyat and Hamilton all having moments at Turn 10, while Vettel spun at Turn 9.
Rosberg set the early pace with a 1m 56.824s, with Hamilton a further tenth back. The rain continued to fall, meaning the times set early in the session stood firm. The McLarens of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button could only manage 11th and 14th respectively, with the Lotus cars of Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado and Williams’ Valterri Bottas also finishing in the Q2 drop zone.
