On Sunday, the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Daytona 500 front row was set at Daytona International Speedway (DIS), and it was series Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate, Chase Elliott – with a qualifying lap speed of 196.314 MPH – taking the top spot for next Sunday’s “great american race.”
With his pole, Elliott became the youngest series driver – at the age of 20 years, 2 months and 17 days, and the previous record holder was Austin Dillon (2014 pole winner) – 23 years, 9 months, 27 days – and the sixth different ROTY candidate to capture the Daytona 500 pole at DIS; as well as, becomes the 14th-different driver in the past 14-years to win the Daytona 500 pole award.
Locking in the the outside pole position with a lap speed of 196.036 MPH, was Matt Kenseth.
Rounding out the top-10 qualifying positions were Dale Earnhardt Jr. (195.682 MPH) who qualified in third, defending series champion Kyle Busch (195.207) fourth, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (195.118) fifth, Jimmie Johnson (194.839) sixth, ROTY candidate Ryan Blaney (194.746) seventh, Austin Dillon (194.675) eighth, Carl Edwards (194.662) ninth and Denny Hamlin (194.523) qualified in 10th.
Now that the top-two positions have been decided, the rest of the starting lineup will be determined on Thursday (Feb. 18th) at the conclusion of the Can-Am Duel #1 and Duel #2 qualifying races – they are scheduled to get started at approximately 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. (ET – On FOX Sports 1) respectively.
Prior to Thursday’s duel qualifiers, the teams will have two evening practice sessions beginning with a session from 5:00 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 and then from 6:00 p.m. 6:55 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.
After the duel qualifiers, the teams will have two practice sessions on Friday 12:00 p.m. – 12:55 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. – 2:55 p.m. ET – Both on FOX Sports 1, and then their “Happy Hour” (final) practice will be on Saturday from 12:15 p.m. – 1:55 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.
The 58th annual Daytona 500 is set to get started around 1:00 p.m. (ET) Sunday, Feb. 21st, with television coverage provided by FOX.
