Michael McDowell, who needs to qualify on time to make this Sunday’s 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Daytona 500, was the quickest early Wednesday evening with a lap speed of 200.173 MPH, during the third Daytona 500 practice session at Daytona International Speedway.
The 2011 event winner, Trevor Bayne, was second quickest in the session with a lap speed of 199.916 MPH, and he was followed by Greg Biffle (199.619 MPH) who was third, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (199.252) fourth and Casey Mears (199.164) was fifth.
Rounding out the top-10 quickest drivers in the practice were Paul Menard (199.124 MPH) who was sixth, Regan Smith (198.983) seventh, series Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate and pole-sitter, Chase Elliott (198.286) eighth, AJ Allmendinger (197.681) ninth and ROTY candidate Brian Scott (197.633) posting the 10th-quickest lap speed.
The teams will have one more practice this evening from 6:10 p.m. – 6:55 p.m. (ET), and FOX Sports 1 will continue to air television coverage of practice.
Now that the top-two starting positions were decided this past Sunday, the rest of the starting lineup will be determined on Thursday (Feb. 18th) at the conclusion of the Can-Am Duel #1 and Duel #2 qualifying races – they are scheduled to get started at approximately 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 respectively.
After the duel qualifiers, the teams will have two practice sessions on Friday 12:00 p.m. – 12:55 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. – 2:55 p.m. ET both on FOX Sports 1, and then their “Happy Hour” (final) practice will be on Saturday from 12:15 p.m. – 1:55 p.m. ET – on FOX Sports 1.
The 58th annual Daytona 500 is set to get started around 1:00 p.m. (ET) Sunday, Feb. 21st, with television coverage provided by FOX.
