Dale Earnhardt Jr., in Thursday night’s 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Can-Am Duel at Daytona (qualifying) race No. 1, won the event, and will now start the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway from third.
Earnhardt, who also ran the most laps – 43 out of 60, received his fifth Duel win where his latest came last year.
Last year’s Daytona 500 race winner, Joey Logano, finished in second – 0.183 seconds behind Earnhardt, and they were followed by series Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate, Ryan Blaney who finished third, Kevin Harvick fourth and Denny Hamlin was fifth.
Sunday’s pole-sitter and series Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate, Chase Elliott finished sixth, while Kasey Kahne was seventh, Greg Biffle eighth, ROTY candidate Chris Buescher ninth and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., rounding out the top-10 finishing positions.
Failing to make the starting lineup for Sunday’s event due to their finish in this qualifying race was Josh Wise (17th) and Cole Whitt (22nd – Did Not Finish).
