David Starr, with a lap speed of 183.516 MPH, was the fastest in Friday afternoon’s second 2016 NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) practice session for Saturday’s Powershares QQQ 300 at Daytona International Speedway (DIS).
Series Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate, Brandon Jones, was second fastest with a lap speed of 183.109 MPH, and he was followed by John Hunter Nemechek (183.035 MPH) who was third, ROTY candidate Ryan Preece (182.964) fourth and Benny Gordon (182.426) was fifth.
Rounding out the top-10 fastest drivers in the session were Daniel Suarez (181.273 MPH) who was sixth, Ty Dillon (181.108) seventh, series ROTY candidate, Bobby Labonte (180.625) eighth, Erik Jones (180.567) ninth and Ryan Reed (180.144) posting the 10th-fastest lap speed.
The teams will return for their “Happy Hour” (final) practice from 3:00 p.m. – 3:55 p.m. (ET) this afternoon, with FOX Sports 1 providing television coverage.
Qualifying to determine the starting lineup for Saturday’s race will be held early that morning at 10:00 a.m. (ET), and television coverage will be provided by FOX Sports 1. And, at the time of writing, there are 48-drivers attempting to make the race, leaving seven of them having to qualify on time to make the 40-car lineup.
Tommy Houston, since Feb. 14, 1987, has held the title as the fastest NXS driver in qualifying at Dover, when he ran a qualifying record lap speed of 194.389 MPH.
The 35th annual Powershares QQQ 300 is scheduled to get started around 3:50 p.m. (ET) Saturday afternoon, and FOX Sports 1 will provide television coverage of the event.
