Superman Jimmie Johnson earns 77th Sprint Cup win in overtime shootout

CeByHkGW0AEKvkTSunday afternoon at Auto Club Speedway (ACS), and with a green-white-checkered dash to the finish, it was six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) champion, Jimmie Johnson, denying the domination of Kevin Harvick, to win the 2016 NSCS Auto Club 400.

This was Johnson’s second series victory and third top-10 finish of the season, his 77th series career victory in 512 races, and his sixth series victory in 22 races at ACS.

Following Johnson and Harvick (led the most laps – 142 out of 205) to the drop of the checkered flag were Denny Hamlin finishing third, Joey Logano fourth and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished fifth.

Series Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate, Chase Elliott, brought home sixth-place, while Carl Edwards finished seventh, AJ Allmendinger eighth, Brad Keselowski ninth and Jamie McMurray rounding out the top-10 finishing positions.

With his second-place finish, Harvick maintains the points lead and leaves Fontana with a 11-point leader over today’s race winner, Jimmie Johnson.

Johnson leads first Sprint Cup test session at Las Vegas

Jimmie-JohnsonEarly Thursday afternoon at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS), the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) held their first (of two) 2016 Kobalt 400 test/practice session, and it was Jimmie Johnson – with a lap speed of 192.981 MPH, showing the fastest way around the speedway.

2016 NSCS Daytona 500 winner, Denny Hamlin, was second quickest with a lap speed of 192.843 MPH, and he was followed by Matt Kenseth (192.137 MPH) who was third, Brian Vickers (191.564) fourth and Danica Patrick (191.211) was fifth.

Rounding out the top-10 quickest drivers in the session were Brad Keselowski (191.096 MPH) who was sixth, Kyle Busch (190.995) seventh, series Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate, Ryan Blaney (190.671) eighth, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (190.658) ninth and Kurt Busch (190.651) posting the 10th-quickest lap speed.

The teams will have their final test/practice session later this afternoon from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. ET No TV Coverage, and then return on Friday for their first regular practice from 1:30 p.m. – 2:55 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.

Qualifying to determine the starting lineup for Sunday’s event will be on Friday at 7:45 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1, and it was last year that Jeff Gordon – with a qualifying lap speed of 194.679 MPH – set the new series LVMS qualifying track record.

On Saturday, the teams will have two more practice sessions beginning with a session from 11:30 a.m. – 12:25 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1, and then their “Happy Hour” (final) practice from 2:30 p.m. – 3:20 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.

The 14th annual Kobalt 400 is scheduled to get underway around 3:50 p.m. (ET) Sunday afternoon, and FOX will provide television coverage of the event.

Jimmie Johnson scores his 76th career Sprint Cup win, tying Dale Earnhardt on the all-time wins list

CcVRBXtWoAA1a0VThe 2013 and six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) champion, Jimmie Johnson finished ahead (under caution) of fellow Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Dale Earnhardt Jr., to win Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS).

Johnson, who won this event last year, received his first series victory and first top-10 finish of the 2016 season, his 76th series career victory in 509 races and his fifth series victory in 25 races at AMS.

Following Johnson and Earnhardt to the drop of the checkered flag were Kyle Busch finishing third, Kurt Busch fourth and Carl Edwards finished fifth.

Rounding out the top-10 finishing positions were Kevin Harvick (led the the most laps – 131 out 330) taking sixth-place, Martin Truex Jr. seventh, series Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate, Chase Elliott eighth, Brad Keselowski ninth and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. bringing home 10th-place.

With his 3rd-place finish, the defending series champion, Kyle Busch, takes over the points lead and leaves Atlanta with a three-point lead over Martin Truex Jr.

Jimmie Johnson is still fast after Thursday night’s crash at Daytona International Speedway

Jimmie Johnson, with a lap speed of 194.083 MPH, led a field of 13-drivers early Friday afternoon in the sixth 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Daytona 500 practice session at Daytona International Speedway (DIS).

Last weekend’s Sprint Unlimited race winner, Denny Hamlin, was second quickest with a lap speed of 193.861 MPH, and he was followed by Sunday’s pole-sitter and NSCS Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate, Chase Elliott (193.216) who was third, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (192.653) fourth and Kasey Kahne (192.505) was fifth.

The 2011 Daytona 500 race winner, Trevor Bayne (191.498 MPH) posted the sixth quickest lap speed, while ROTY candidate Chris Buescher (190.267) was seventh, Michael Annett (189.873) eighth, Casey Mears (189.849) ninth and Clint Bowyer (189.565) rounding out the top-10.

There will be one more practice session this afternoon from 2:00 p.m. – 2:55 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1, and then the teams will have their “Happy Hour” (final) practice on Saturday from 12:15 p.m. – 1:55 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.

The 58th annual Daytona 500 is set to get started around 1:00 p.m. (ET) Sunday, Feb. 21st, with television coverage provided by FOX.

Jimmie Johnson lead fifth practice, as majority of Cup teams decide not to participate in Thursday practice,

johnsonOnly seven NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) drivers selected to participate in Thursday’s early afternoon practice at Daytona International Speedway in preparation for tonight’s Can-Am Duel qualifying races and Sunday’s Daytona 500.

In the “55-minute” long practice, it was Jimmie Johnson who was the quickest – with a lap speed of 193.054 MPH, and he was followed by series Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate, Brian Scott and driver Aric Almirola (with the identical lap speed of 189.897 MPH) who were second and third quickest respectively.

Rounding out the final seven quickest drivers were Ty Dillon (189.837 MPH) who was fourth, Ryan Newman (189.426) fifth, Kyle Larson (189.362) sixth and Michael Waltrip (188.363) posting the seventh-quickest lap speed.

Now that the top-two starting positions were decided this past Sunday, the rest of the starting lineup will be determined at the conclusion of this evening’s Can-Am Duel #1 and Duel #2 qualifying races – they are scheduled to get started at approximately 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 respectively.

After the duel qualifiers, the teams will have two practice sessions on Friday 12:00 p.m. – 12:55 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. – 2:55 p.m. ET both on FOX Sports 1, and then their “Happy Hour” (final) practice will be on Saturday from 12:15 p.m. – 1:55 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.

Second quickest in the session with a lap speed of 133.427 MPH was outside pole-sitter Kevin Harvick, and he was followed by Brad Keselowski (133.399 MPH) who was third, Joey Logano (132.845) fourth and Kurt Busch (132.803) was fifth.
