Gordon’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jimmie Johnson, will sit on the outside pole with a qualifying lap speed of 201.135 MPH.

Only the top-two starting positions were locked in today, and the rest of the teams will have to wait until Thursday, February 19th, for the Budweiser Duel qualifying races (7:00 pm ET – On FOX) to determine the rest of the starting lineup.

Rounding out the top-ten fastest qualifiers were Denny Hamlin (200.933 MPH) qualifying third, Matt Kenseth (200.214) fourth, Kyle Busch (200.187) fifth, Kasey Kahne (199.867) sixth, Carl Edwards (197.837) seventh, Ty Dillon (197.507) eighth, Austin Dillon (196.962) ninth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (195.080) qualified in 10th.

It will be Wednesday, February 18th, that the teams return to action on the track with two practice sessions (2:00 pm – 2:45 pm & 315 pm – 3:55 pm ET – both on FOX Sports 2).

Updated 6:14pm – Dale Earnhardt Jr and Denny Hamlin cars fail post qualifying inspection. Times disallowed in each of the three qualifying sessions

B91EBkcIgAMVHcCLeavine Family Racing’s Michael McDowell, with a lap speed of 199.322 MPH, was the quickest Saturday afternoon during the second Daytona 500 practice session at Daytona International Speedway.

Second quickest was Jimmie Johnson with a lap speed of 199.313 MPH, and he was followed by Ty Dillon (199.300 MPH) who was third, Kasey Kahne (199.080) fourth and Jeff Gordon (199.058) was fifth.

Rounding out the top-ten quickest drivers in the practice were Dale Earnhardt Jr. (199.053 MPH) who was sixth, Paul Menard (198.952) seventh, Martin Truex Jr. (198.597 – suffered a cracked oil pan, but will NOT change engines) eighth, Landon Cassill (198.351) ninth and Brad Keselowski (198.264) posting the tenth quickest lap speed.

Ryan Newman, who was 15th quickest, had engine failure and will have to change the engine.

“Something just happened in the bottom end of the motor going into Turn 3,” stated Newman. “Everything was going as planned until then.  The Caterpillar Chevrolet tried to diesel on me and it doesn’t like to diesel.  We will change the motor, figure out what happened to this one and get ready for tonight with a different race car and qualifying tomorrow.”

The teams return to the track to qualify for the Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 15th, at 1:30 pm (ET – On FOX).

Group qualifying is being introduced for the first time for the Daytona 500, and as in previous qualifying for the 500, only the first two starting positions will be determined. The rest of the teams will have to wait until Thursday, February 19th, for the Budweiser Duel qualifying races (7:00 pm ET – On FOX) to determine the rest of the starting lineup.

The 57th annual Daytona 500 is set to get underway on Sunday, February 22nd, with an approximate starting time of 1:20 pm (ET) and FOX will be providing television coverage of the event.
